The paper of "Beyond Pairs: Generalizing the Geo-dipole for Quantifying Spatial Patterns in Geographic Fields" authored by Rui Zhu, Phaedon C. kyriakidis, and Krzysztof Janowicz has won the BEST PAPER AWARD at the 20th international conference of geo-information science.
Rui Zhu made a lightning talk at the Center for Spatial Studies on Feb 28th, 2017. He presented the idea of bridging the Chinese philosophical wisdom, i.e., IChing, with Geographic Information Analysis. His slides could be found here.
We currently have two full papers accepted at the 20th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (AGILE 2017):
Happy New Year! Our team published a new research article on the International Journal of Geographical Information Science:
Song Gao, Krzysztof Janowicz, Daniel R. Montello, Yingjie Hu, Jiue-an Yang, Grant McKenzie, Yiting Ju, Li Gong, Benjamin Adams, Bo Yan. (2017) A Data-Synthesis-Driven Method for Detecting and Extracting Vague Cognitive Regions. International Journal of Geographical Information Science, DOI:10.1080/13658816.2016.1273357.
Mai, G., Janowicz, K., Hu, Y., & Gao, S. ADCN: An Anisotropic Density-Based Clustering Algorithm. In 24th ACM SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (ACM SIGSPATIAL 2016), Oct.31-Nov.3, Burlingame, California, USA
A paper entitled Things and Strings: Improving Place Name Disambiguation from Short Texts by Combining Entity Co-Occurrence with Topic Modeling by Yiting Ju, Benjamin Adams, Krzysztof Janowicz, Yingjie Hu, Bo Yan and Grant McKenzie was accepted at the 20th International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (EKAW 2016), which will takes place from November 19th, 2016 to November 24th, 2016 in Bologna, Italy.
GIScience 2016 gave STKO Lab an opportunity for an "STKO Reunion Event"! STKO alumnus, Dr. Ben Adams, Dr. Grant McKenzie, and Dr. Yingjie Hu got together with current STKO students. Spatial Data on the Web workshop has been successfully held with the help of all STKO members! Every member had a great time in GIScience 2016 and enjoyed "Jano's smiling face" a lot. :-)
Big Congrats to both Yingjie Hu and Song Gao, who were awarded the "2015 National Award for Outstanding Chinese PhD Students Study Abroad" from China Government Scholarship Council (CSC). Only three UCSB students (and yes, two of three are from UCSB Geography STKO Lab!) got this award this year and no more than 500 young talents with remarkable academic achievements across multidisciplinary domains received this award all over the world.
